What can this site help you with?

Start with the job that sounds like yours.

How does a quote request work?

Three steps.

  1. Tell us about the job in the form at the bottom of this page. A photo of the roof or the damage helps.
  2. A local roofing contractor will call, text or email to set up a visit.
  3. The roofer looks at the roof and quotes the job. Before you sign, check the roofer’s city and state licenses.

The quote is free. Sioux Falls Roofing is an independent guide and does no roofing work itself.

What do Sioux Falls roofs have to stand up to?

Hail gets the headlines. Wind and winter do just as much damage.

Hail

Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner and McCook counties logged 228 NOAA hail reports from 2015 to 2025, about 21 a year, with May and August the busiest months. Most stones are 1 to 1.75 inches. On 29 May 2022, 2 to 2.5 inch hail fell on Sioux Falls itself.

The city sees it in its permit counts. A typical year with one hail event brings 1,800 to 2,000 shingle permits, and 2022 brought more than 5,000.

Wind

The 12 May 2022 derecho brought winds over 100 mph and was one of NOAA’s 18 billion-dollar disasters that year. On 25 July 2026, gusts above 90 mph damaged roofs across Sioux Falls, Tea, Harrisburg and Brandon. Big wind years (2021, 2022, 2025) and big hail years do not always line up.

Snow and freeze-thaw

Sioux Falls averages 45.3 inches of snow and 162 nights at or below freezing (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals). About 97 days a year swing above and below 32 degrees. Ice dams build at the eaves, and the city’s building code table marks Sioux Falls as a place where ice barrier underlayment is required.

Can a roofer pay your insurance deductible?

No. South Dakota law bars residential roofers from advertising or promising to pay or rebate any part of your insurance deductible, and a contract that breaks the rule is void (SDCL 37-24-50).

Which towns can you request a quote in?

Sioux Falls and the towns around it. Roofs age differently across the area. Harrisburg and Brandon grew fast in the 2000s, so many of their first roofs are now 17 to 26 years old, while half of Canton’s homes were built before 1960.

Questions about roofing in Sioux Falls

Do I need a permit to reshingle a house in Sioux Falls?

Yes. The city charges a flat $40 permit fee for residential reshingling under its 2026 fee schedule, and a homeowner may pull the permit themselves.

No. The state requires only a contractor’s excise tax license, which is a tax registration. Inside Sioux Falls city limits, a roofer also needs the city’s Residential Roofing and Repair license or a Residential Building Contractor license.

Published figures for a basic asphalt reroof run from about $5,900 for a 1,282 square foot roof to about $12,300 for 2,000 square feet, and none of them shows its method. A quote on your own roof is the only firm number.

April to September, with most NOAA hail reports in May and August. Almost no hail falls outside those months.

Maybe not in full. Since 2024, at least one South Dakota carrier settles wind and hail roof losses at actual cash value once the roof is 10 years old, and that pays less than a new roof costs.
